How to Use a Shovel

The New Strong’s Expanded Exhaustive Concordance and The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge are the shovel and pickaxe that assist you in digging into the scriptures. Here is a guide how to use the shovel. The guide for the pickaxe will come later.

The New Strong’s Expanded Exhaustive Concordance has Five Sections

  1. Main Concordance
  2. Dictionary of Hebrew Words
  3. Dictionary of Greek Words
  4. Topical Index
  5. Miscellaneous

How to Use it

  1. Look up your word in Main Concordance.

When you locate your word in the Main Concordance it will show you every scripture where your word occurs in the bible.

  1. Locate, in the list, the scripture where your word occurs
  2. To the far right you find what is called, the Strong’s number
  3. Look up the Strong’s number in the Dictionaries

If your word is from a scripture in the New Testament then you will find it in the Dictionary of Greek Words. If your word is from a scripture in the Old Testament then you will find it in the Dictionary of Hebrew Words. When you locate the correct Strong’s number you will find three main things.

  • The Greek or Hebrew word
  • The definition of the word
  • The other ways this Greek or Hebrew word is translated.

The information provided about the Greek or Hebrew word is very helpful to understanding the word. Added to that you can also look up the other ways the word is translated. When you locate these words in the Main Concordance, you will find the scriptures where they are located. These scriptures will provide a context and a fullness to the definition of the word.

‘Strong’s’ is the shovel that will help you do what is called a word study, but there is more to be unearthed. That is when you will need the pickaxe (The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge). Remember, there is a treasure of wisdom in the bible, but it will not give it up to lazy students. You will have to dig for it (Proverbs 2).
